PBA resumes today: Alaska vs GlobalPort; Petron vs ROS

After a twinbill postponed by inclement weather last Wednesday, the PBA Governors’ Cup gets back into gear with scheduled games on Friday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

PBA resumes: Alaska vs GlobalPort

Commissioner’s Cup champion Alaska finally gets to make its tournament debut against GlobalPort in the opening match at 5:15 p.m. before unbeaten defending champion Rain or Shine battle Petron at 7:30 p.m.

The Aces will parade new import Wendell McKines, a 6-foot-5 inside operator who will be stepping into the shoes of the last tournament’s Best Import winner Robert Dozier. Tabbed to lead the Aces’ local attack anew is rookie forward Calvin Abueva, who is leading the race for the season’s Most Valuable Player trophy.

GlobalPort is hoping to bounce back from a blowout loss last Saturday at the hands of Rain or Shine, with import Markeith Cummings hoping to get more local support. Batang Pier reliables Sol Mercado, Jay Washington, Willie Miller, and Gary David, the Gilas Pilipinas stalwart who made a quiet tournament debut last Saturday, are expected to provide the firepower for the squad.

In the main game, Rain or Shine wants to strethc its win streak to three games to keep solid hold of the top spot when it takes on a dangerous Petron side.

Arizona Reid has been stellar for the Elasto Painters, who have drawn steady support from Ryan Arana and Paul Lee. The squad has more reasons to be optimistic with the return to the lineup of Jeff Chan and Gabe Norwood, who rejoined the team for cameo appearances last Saturday for the first time after their Gilas campaign.

Petron is also trying to build on a victory after the Boosters booked a win last Sunday against Barangay Ginebra San Miguel. Elijah Millsap has been solid for Petron, which featured stellar performances from Marcio Lassiter, Alex Cabagnot, and Arwind Santos against the Gin Kings.
