US Open: Nadal, Federer, Azarenka, Williams cruise into 3rd round
The big names in the Men's and Women's Tennis , Rafael Nadal, Serena Williams, Roger Federer, Victoria Azarenka, played on the Day 4 of US Open Tennis, the final grandslam of the year held in the Flushing Meadows, New York.
Rafa Nadal remains undefeated on hardcourts this year by crushing Rogerio Dutra Silva of Brazil 6-2 6-1 6-0 to storm into the third round of the U.S. Open on Thursday (Friday, PHL time).
The second-seeded Spaniard improved his hardcourt mark to 17-0, a run that has brought him tournament titles at Indian Wells, Montreal and Cincinnati among his nine trophies in 2013.
Nadal faced only one break point in the 92-minute rout on Arthur Ashe Stadium's center court, ripping 30 winners to just nine.
World number two Nadal, who missed the 2012 U.S. Open because of a knee injury, will next play Ivan Dodig of Croatia.
ROGER FEDERER. No.7 seed
Roger Federer had no trouble in the second round of a Grand Slam tournament this time. The 17-time major champion beat Carlos Berlocq 6-3, 6-2, 6-1 in 95 minutes Thursday at the U.S. Open. It was in the second round that the Swiss great was shocked by Sergiy Stakhovsky at Wimbledon.
The 48th-ranked Berlocq has never made it past the second round at a Grand Slam event and is 0-17 against top-10 opponents. Federer is seeded seventh at Flushing Meadows, his worst since 2002. But he hasn't dropped a set through two victories.
SERENA WILLIAMS. No.1 seed
Serena Williams took another emphatic step in defense of her U.S. Open title by crushing Galina Voskoboeva of Kazakhstan 6-3 6-0 on Thursday (Friday, PHL time) to reach the third round of the year's final grand slam.
The top-seeded American took a short while to get accustomed to breezy conditions on Arthur Ashe Stadium court before winning 10 of the last 11 games in a 69-minute rout.
Williams, 31, has dropped just four games in four sets at Flushing Meadows this year, slamming the door on the 77th-ranked Voskoboeva by limiting her to nine points in the second set.
The world number one will next meet Voskoboeva's compatriot Yaroslava Shvedova, a 6-2 6-3 winner against Patricia Mayr-Achleitner of Austria
VICTORIA AZARENKA. No.2 seed
Victoria Azarenka charged into the third round of the U.S. Open on Thursday (Friday, PHL time) with a 6-3 6-1 win over Canada's Aleksandra Wozniak.
Last year's U.S. Open runner-up, Azarenka had some problems with her serve on a windy day and was broken three times. But the world number two was always in control of the match and cruised to victory in a little over an hour.
Her opponent in the third round is Alize Cornet of France, the 26th seed, who beat Croatia's Ajla Tomljanovic 6-2 6-2.
