WBO persuades Marquez to take 5th Pacquiao fight
The World Boxing Organization (WBO) admitted that it has taken steps to set up a fifth fight between Manny Pacquiao and his Mexican rival Juan Manuel Marquez.
No less than its Puerto Rican president, Francicso “Paco” Varcarcel, flew to Mexico to convince Marquez in accepting the fifth bout, according to Boxing Scene.
The WBO president, however, went home empty handed as the Mexican counter puncher refused to back from his stand not to fight Pacquiao again.
“I do not know if he will [still] change his opinion. I really don't know,” said Varcarcel.
Marquez has fought Pacquiao four times. He was only successful in their last outing in December 2012, when he finished the Filipino off with a devastating counter right hand in the sixth round.
Pacquiao asked for a rematch, but Marquez declined, citing that he can no longer top what he did in the fourth bout.
“Juan's position is that he had a thorn in his side and he already pulled it out when he beat Pacquiao, and he doesn't see a reason to give [Pacquiao] the opportunity [of a fifth fight]. That's what Juan is thinking," Valcarcel said.
