After beating 'larong mayaman' SMB, Yeo believes Air21 has shot vs San Mig Coffee
Air 21 star guard Joseph Yeo was at the center of controversy in the PLDT Home TVolution Commissioner’s Cup quarterfinals for comments he made after getting ejected in the do-or-die game between the Express and the San Miguel Beermen.
“I know these guys, mga larong mayaman yan kaya walang nangyayari sa team na yan,” Yeo said of his former teammates at the Beermen camp. After scoring 11 points, he was ejected in the second quarter after a low blow against San Miguel Beer guard Chris Ross.
In the end, the former La Salle stalwart had the last laugh after the Express pulled off an epic win in double overtime.
“The biggest thing for me here is not about the bonus, not about the money, but it’s about getting the respect,” Yeo told InterAksyon.com.
“I came from that team. Dati iniisip nila kapag Air 21 kalaban, parang it’s a win already. Yun ang gusto ko makuha, they give us the respect na para bang each time they play Air 21, it’s a different Air 21 team.
“I think we’ve earned that respect in the quarterfinals, beating this team. I think this is the strongest team for me talent-wise. Pero I don’t think they’re the best team.”
Yeo joined his former college coach Franz Pumaren at the Express camp at the end of last season, and has been instrumental in the team’s rise from the cellar.
“Iba na itong team namin. To be honest, I had that impression before na katulad ng iniisip ng mga dati kong teammates, pero ngayon iba na. Andito na si Asi (Taulava), si Mac Mac (Cardona), Sean Anthony, talagang nadagdagan na ng players and we’ve become a different team,” he said.
The Express will hope to slay another dragon when they enter a best-of-five semifinals series against the San Mig Super Coffee Mixers, the squad that has won each of the last two PBA tournaments.
Yeo believes that Air 21 has a shot against the champion squad.
“Bakit kami titigil dito after beating San Miguel? I think we can match up with San Mig Coffee in the semis. We’re a very balanced team. Our standing in the elimination round doesn’t reflect what kind of team we are. I think we should be in the top six at least, marami lang kaming itinapon na games. But we proved to everyone that we’re better than a seventh seed,” said Yeo.
