Yeng Guiao fined P100k for 'mongoloid' remark on Cliff Hodge

Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao incurred a hefty fine yet again, this time due to his confrontation with Meralco player Cliff Hodge during a game last Wednesday.
The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) slapped the Elasto Painters tactician with a P100,000 fine for calling Hodge a “mongoloid” after the player’s attack on Rain or Shine’s Raymond Almazan.

“We find the conduct of Coach Guiao unbecoming and unacceptable on two counts: first, accosting and insulting a player with total disregard for civility and circumspection; second, using the word 'mongoloid,' a derogatory term alluding to people with Down’s syndrome,” said PBA Commissioner Chito Salud in a statement.

An angry Guiao confronted Hodge when the Filipino-American hammered Almazan’s face with a closed fist during the closing seconds of the Meralco-Rain or Shine game the other day. Referees called Hodge for a Flagrant Foul Penalty 1.

Salud said Hodge’s action warranted an additional penalty which he has upgraded.

“The foul committed by Meralco’s Cliff Hodge on Rain or Shine’s Raymond Almazan at the 35 second mark of the 4th quarter of game 2 of the Commissioner’s Cup Quarterfinals series is hereby upgraded to a Flagrant Foul Penalty 2 for being excessive and unnecessary. The review shows that Hodge during a rebound play hit the face of Almazan with a closed fist,” said the PBA chief.

“A fine is hereby imposed on Hodge in the amount of twenty thousand pesos (Php 20,000.00).”

This isn’t the first time Guiao has gotten into trouble with the league.

During Rain or Shine's PBA Philippine Cup semifinals against Petron Blaze, he was meted a P100,000 fine on top of a 1-game suspension due to consecutive games where he was ejected for technical fouls.

His Rain or Shine team was also slapped a P2 million fine after he led the squad to a partial walkout in Game 6 of their Philippine Cup finals against San Mig Coffee while questioning “one-sided calls.”
