Gilas Pilipinas without some key players in 2014 FIBA Asia Cup
Gilas Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes has asked several members of the Philippine national training pool to get adequate rest first before joining their practices for the FIBA World Cup and the Asian Games.
This is why the team will not have a full lineup when the FIBA Asia Cup kicks off on Friday in China.
“We have pin-pointed several players whom we want to rest,” said Reyes, citing Marc Pingris, Gabe Norwood, Jeffrei Chan, Jasyon Castro, Larry Fonacier and Jimmy Alapag as among those on the “recovery list.”
“Jayson is going to undergo a knee procedure and then Larry Fonacier has a bad back. Jimmy Alapag we asked to rest as well,” explained the Gilas coach.
“So 'yung mga iyon na na-identify ko na kailangan magpahinga hindi na natin maisasama sa China. That's why that's the lineup that we have,” he added.
Named to the Gilas squad that will see action in Wuhan, China are Marcus Douthit, Ranidel De Ocampo, LA Tenorio, Gary David, Japeth Aguilar, June Mar Fajardo, Beau Belga, Paul Lee, Jared Dillinger and Jay Washington, and Gilas cadets Kevin Alas and Garvo Lanete.
Douthit, De Ocampo, Tenorio, David, Aguilar and Fajardo are all part of the Gilas squad that won second in the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship, while Lee, Dillinger and Washington are the latest additions to the national pool.
The team will go up against their Asian counterparts in the FIBA Asia Cup, which runs from July 11 to 19, before flying to Miami on July 24 to hook up with naturalized player Andray Blatche.
Gilas will train in Miami until August 3, before flying to Spain to continue their preparations for the FIBA Basketball World Cup.
