Head coach Chot Reyes is one with his Gilas Pilipinas team in hoping that the Philippines will be bracketed with defending champion Team USA in the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Spain.

Chot Reyes want 3-month Gilas PH preparation for World Cup

National coach Chot Reyes wants Gilas Pilipinas to have at least a three-month preparation as it gears up for the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Spain.


“At least, three months (ang ideal) syempre. Dati ganun rin hiningi ko (for the Fiba-Asia Championship), pero nabigyan lang tayo ng two months,” Reyes told Spin.ph.

Gilas Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes said they would invite collegiate stars Terrence Romeo, Kiefer Ravena, Bobby Ray Parks, Raymond Almazan, Kevin Ferrer, Chris Newsome and Arnold Van Opstal to join the Gilas Pilipinas cadet team.

Philippines labeled 'legend' by FIBA Africa officials says coach Reyes

Philippine national men’s basketball coach Chot Reyes was back in the country on Thursday morning after a scouting trip to the FIBA Africa Championship in the Ivory Coast.


And even though he went into the trip thinking he would have a low profile, the brains behind Gilas Pilipinas was surprised to find out that he was well-known among officials in the tournament because of the Philippines’ hosting of the FIBA Asia Championship earlier this month.

The past week, the coaching staff and players of Gilas Pilipinas has been showered with well-deserved accolades for its historic accomplishment in the FIBA-Asia tournament.

Against all odds, the team finished second and booked a much-appreciated ticket to the World Cup of Basketball in Spain next year. So far, Iran, the Philippines, Korea, the USA and host Spain have qualified. We’ll have to wait for the rest of the 24 slots to be filled.

Chot Reyes to change Gilas Pilipinas line-up to form 'best team'

National coach Chot Reyes said he will be using the same line-up of the Gilas Pilipinas for the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup, but he may consider some changes if necessary.

Chot Reyes: Gilas Pilipinas can make it to FIBA Asia semis

Gilas Pilipinas National team head coach Chot Reyes believes Gilas Pilipinas has a strong chance to make it to the semi-finals of the FIBA Asia Championship 2013, which kicks off on August 1 at the Mall of Asia Arena.


“I think we have a very good chance of to make it to the semi-finals,” Reyes said in a press conference Tuesday. “Beyond that… the beauty and the unpredictability of the FIBA format is that any team can beat any team in a one-game situation.”

Chot Reyes sees better finish for Gilas PH in FIBA Asia Championship

When the FIBA Asia Championship tips off on Thursday, Chot Reyes will become the first coach to lead a PBA-backed national team in a major tournament for a second time since the pro league started lending its players in 1990.


Former coaches Robert Jaworski, Norman Black, Tim Cone, Jong Uichico, and Yeng Guiao called the shots for the national team in one tournament apiece.

Gilas coach Chot Reyes worried about poor play of Marcus Douthit

Smart Gilas Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes is happy about the progress of the squad as it completed the first half of its training tour in New Zealand just 18 days from the opening of the FIBA Asia Championship.


After three games in Napier, the SMART-Gilas Pilipinas national team has a 2-1 record. It won back-to-back matches against club team Hawkes Bay Hawks before dropping a close result to an all-star selection from the National Basketball League on Sunday.

Chot Reyes to announce Gilas Pilipinas 12-man lineup on Thursday

Chot Reyes hasn’t made up his mind on the final composition of the Gilas Pilipinas 12-man lineup.


With only 13 of them leaving with him for the 10-day training camp in New Zealand, Reyes is having a hard time choosing who to drop from the lineup to the reserved list.

It’s practically the same players, who went in Lithuania for a two-week training camp last month.

Gilas Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes has until July 12 to decide whom to name in the national team’s 12-man lineup for the FIBA-Asia Championships here on Aug. 1-11. 


The deadline to submit a 24-man roster fell yesterday with Reyes listing Marcus Douthit, Jimmy Alapag, Jayson Castro, L. A. Tenorio, Ranidel de Ocampo, Larry Fonacier, Gabe Norwood, Gary David, Marc Pingris, JuneMar Fajardo, Jeff Chan, Japeth Aguilar, Beau Belga, Sonny Thoss, Greg Slaughter, Garvo Lanete, Jake Pascual, Ronald Pascual, R. Calvin Abueva to replace Ryan Reyes on Gilas Pilipinas line-up

GILAS Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes has confirmed that Talk ‘N Text guard Ryan Reyes won’t be able to join the team in its two-week training camp in Lithuania, deepening the injury woes of a team even before it could begin the final phase of its preparation for the Fiba-Asia Men's Championship.


Reyes, the Texters' top lock-down defender, has been nursing a hamstring injury that is slow to heal as he joins Sonny Thoss, Kelly Williams and Jared Dillinger on the list of players who won’t make it to the Lithuania camp set on June 2-16 in the Baltic resort town of Palanga.

Denzel Bowles or Michael Dunigan as Gilas' Next Naturalized Player ?

NO less than the leadership of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) and a prominent lawmaker who’s been an ardent supporter of the sport are backing national coach Chot Reyes if he decides to have either Michael Dunigan or Denzel Bowles as Gilas' next naturalized player.


SBP president Manny V. Pangilinan said he’s leaving it all up to Reyes on who he has in mind as candidate for naturalization, a move Antipolo congressman Robbie Puno said he’ll definitely push again at the House of Representative.
