FIBA Asia Championship 2013 for Men is the intercontinental championship for basketball organized by FIBA Asia that serves as the qualifying tournament for the 2014 FIBA World Cup in Spain.

Former NBA first round pick Jarvis Hayes, who joined Qatar as a naturalized player prior to the tournament, sizzled with 25 points on 10-of-13 shooting. He shot 5-of-6 from beyond the arc in 24 minutes of action.

Malaysia finished with its best result in the preliminary round of the FIBA Asia Championship, falling to South Korea by a mere 22 points, 80-58, on Saturday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The Malaysians were victims of extremely lopsided results in their first two outings against Iran and China, the winners of the last seven editions of the Asian tournament. Iran battered Malaysia, 115-25, on opening day before China did the same thing with a 113-22 scoreline.

Malaysia finished with its best result in the preliminary round of the FIBA Asia Championship, falling to South Korea by a mere 22 points, 80-58, on Saturday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The Gilas Pilipinas (Philippines) started slowly once more, but woke up in time in the third quarter to run away with a 77-71 win over Jordan in the FIBA Asia Championship on Friday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Chan led the way for the Philippines with 17 points, Jayson Castro sliced his way into the lane for 16, while Norwood had a dazzling all-around game with eight points, eight rebounds, four assists, two steals, and two blocks. The Philippines will march on to a highly-anticipated matchup with Chinese Taipei on Saturday.

After an upset of defending champion China on the first day of the FIBA Asia Championship, South Korea was hoping for a similar result against another powerhouse Iran.

Persian superstars Hamed Haddadi and Samad Nikkhah Bahrami, however, had other ideas. Former NBA center Haddadi scored 30 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, while scoring ace Bahrami added 23 points, seven rebounds, and four assists to lead Iran to a 76-65 victory over South Korea in their Group C match up.

Japan used a furious third quarter run to break away from a surprisingly tough Hong Kong squad en route to a 96-79 victory on Friday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Hong Kong, traditionally a minnow in Asian competition, waxed hot with eight three-pointers in the first half to keep the game close at the break, trailing Japan by just one point, 41-40. It was still only a hairline lead, 50-49, midway through the third quarter when Japan unleashed a 14-4 run to end the period.

The Philippine national men’s basketball team, Gilas Pilipinas, defeated Saudi Arabia, 78-66, but not before experiencing plenty of struggles against an opponent that was supposed to be an easy opening assignment in the FIBA Asia Championship 2013.

The Philippines’ starting frontcourt of Marcus Douthit and Marc Pingris was a source of strength. Douthit finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds, while Pingris added eight and nine. LA Tenorio and Larry Fonacier led the scoring for Gilas with 12 points apiece.

Kazakhstan cruised to an 81-67 victory over Thailand in a match that ended early Friday morning at the Mall of Asia Arena to open their FIBA Asia Championship 2013 campaign.

Ace forward Anton Ponomarev dominated with 21 points and 13 rebounds for Kazakhstan, which never trailed in the game. Kazakhstan will only have several hours rest as it gears up for a showdown with fellow Group D winner Bahrain at 6 p.m. at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium. Thailand will take on India in the final game of the second day of competition at the MOA Arena.

South Korea turned to suffocating defense to put the clamps on defending champion China to pull out a thrilling 63-59 upset on opening day of the FIBA Asia Championship 2013 on Thursday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

China struggled all game against the South Korean defense, which turned the match into a low-scoring struggle using a variety of full-court traps and zone schemes.

Gilas Pilipinas National team head coach Chot Reyes believes Gilas Pilipinas has a strong chance to make it to the semi-finals of the FIBA Asia Championship 2013, which kicks off on August 1 at the Mall of Asia Arena.

“I think we have a very good chance of to make it to the semi-finals,” Reyes said in a press conference Tuesday. “Beyond that… the beauty and the unpredictability of the FIBA format is that any team can beat any team in a one-game situation.”
