June Mar Fajardo making sure he is ready for Greg Slaughter

PETRON big man June Mar Fajardo hasn't faced top pick rival Greg Slaughter in a league game since they battled each other inside the court in Cebu four years ago.

Fajardo, however, is making sure he'll be ready the next time they meet.

The 6-foot-10 sophomore center admitted he has no firm grasp on how big Slaughter has improved since they squared off in the 2009 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) Finals between University of Cebu and University of Visayas.

But no matter how good this season's top pick overall has become, Fajardo has made it clear - without sounding cocky - that he, too, is preparing for the much-anticipated battle of the giants.

“Di ko pa masabi kasi di pa kami nagharap uli sa game talaga," said Fajardo, the No. 1 pick of last season's rookie draft. "Basta pinaghahandaan ko na 'yun.”

Although he has made giants strides in his rookie season to become of the the league's most dominant big men, Fajardo also pointed out that he is not sitting around waiting for the showdown with Slaughter.

The soft-spoken native of Pinamungahan, Cebu said he's also getting good advice.

“Di ko lang alam kung may ibang moves pa siya pero ang sabi lang sa akin na ang pag-stop kay Slaughter, dapat daw ipalabas siya sa comfort zone niya,” Fajardo added.

Fajardo’s game has improved dramatically during the tailend of the season, as can be gleaned from his averages of 18.7 points and 14.7 rebounds during the Governors Cup Finals against San Mig Coffee.

The battle of the league’s two tallest centers take place on Christmas Day as the Boosters take on the Kings at the Mall of Asia Arena.
