Kobe Paras banners Batang Gilas as their journey continues in FIBA Asia U-18 Championship
After the Philippine national U-17 basketball team's decent showing in the FIBA U-17 World Championship, another youth team is vying for a trip to the world stage: the Batang Gilas U-18 national team.
Bannered by US high school prospect Kobe Paras, the squad also mentored by Jamike Jarin shall try to grab the spotlight as well when they battle foes at the FIBA Asia U-18 Championship in Doha, Qatar starting on August 19.
The Philippines qualified for the Asian tilt after winning the SEABA U-18 Championship last May. The top three finishers in this event will earn a ticket to the FIBA U-19 World Championship slated in Greece next year.
Joining the cast are U-17 mainstays Jolo Go, Paul Desiderio, and Richard Escoto who will all travel straight from Dubai. Also part of the lineup are Mark Dyke, Aaron Black, Manuel Mosqueda, Dave Yu, Leonard Santillan, Andrei Caracut, Ranbill Tongco, and Brandrey Bienes.
Dropped from the roster are Henry Asilum and Thirdy Ravena who are currently playing in the UAAP Season 77 basketball tournament.
The Philippines are in Group B and shall open their campaign against Jordan on August 20, followed by a collision with rival Korea the day after.
Since there are only three teams in their group, all nations are already granted passes to the second round. — Solar Sports Desk
