Gilas Pilipinas needs June Mar Fajardo says NBA Scout
NBA scout Jim Kelly, once a part of the coaching staff of Presto/Great Taste during the early 1990s, remains to keep an eye on Philippine basketball despite his work for the Dallas Mavericks.
That’s why during one of his visits to the practices of Gilas Pilipinas, he quickly noticed one player missing from the team: reigning back-to-back PBA MVP June Mar Fajardo.
“They’re gonna need size out there,” Kelly told InterAksyon in an exclusive interview. “I’ve seen June Mar play and I saw him dominating the PBA while I’m watching on television.”
Fajardo decided not to join Gilas Pilipinas this year, citing his recovery from a plantar fasciitis injury as a reason.
Size still does matter in basketball especially in international competitions, Kelly said, as “players have become bigger” through the years.
Kelly has followed Fajardo’s game and during a conversation with Barangay Ginebra coach Tim Cone, the NBA scout said that the 6’10″ center can become “one of the best big men in the NBA Summer League” if he ever decides to play there.
Gilas Pilipinas is currently preparing for the 2015 FIBA Asia Championship where a spot in the 2016 Rio Olympics is at stake.
