PBA: Joe Devance to face heavy sanctions after video review of fight

SAN Mig Coffee forward Joe Devance faces heavy sanctions for his role in the melee that marred the Mixers' game against Globalport in the PBA Governors Cup on Wednesday night, sources said.

Devance escaped with a technical foul after the fracas that erupted in the third quarter of San Mig's 102-88 win at the Cuneta Astrodome, but league sources said video replays have established that it was his action that fanned the emotions in one of the worst fights seen in the league in years.

The Fil-American forward was the first to react upon seeing free-agent signing Marvin Hayes appear to kick San Mig import Marqus Blakely in the head as he stood up after the two fell to the floor during a rebound battle.

After Devance shoved Hayes to the floor, Globalport rookie Kelly Nabong jumped to the aid of his teammate and ended up exchanging blows with San Mig star Marc Pingris.

“That was an eventful game. I’m worried that we may have won the battle but lost the war,” Cone said shortly after his team’s 102-88 victory.

Defending champion San Mig Coffee gained the last ticket to the PBA Commissioner’s Cup semis by suppressing Meralco, 90-82, in Game 3 of their quarterfinals showdown.

San Mig Coffee Mixers PBA 2013

Just like in their 2012 quarterfinals duel, the Mixers were able to fight back from a Game 1 defeat to the Bolts by claiming the next two games in their best-of-three series.

Marc Pingris had 14 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists for the Mixers, who will face league leader Alaska in the semifinals. The 6’5” forward was even more effective at the defensive end, containing Meralco’s Mac Cardona during the most crucial minutes of the game.

San Mig Coffee’s quarterfinals success was reminiscent of the same feat they pulled off against the Bolts in the 2012 edition of the Commissioner’s Cup.
