LA Lakers, Miami Heat are early favorites for NBA championship

WASHINGTON – LeBron James had yet to claim an NBA championship when he arrived in Miami two years ago, boldly predicting multiple title runs with Heat teammates Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade.


Now, as the NBA prepares to open its 67th season on Tuesday, “King” James is coming off a crowning achievement, having won his first NBA title with the Heat last June and then guiding the US Olympic team to London gold in August.

Nash Racela named new head coach of FEU Tamaraws

The FEU Tamaraws have officially named Nash Racela as the head coach of the squad for the upcoming UAAP season.


Racela replaced Bert Flores, who led the Tamaraws to a 9-5 record in the elimination round of Season 75 and fell just short of the final four.

FEU is only one year removed from making back-to-back appearances in the UAAP finals.

Fil-Am Pitcher Tim Lincecum helping San Francisco Giants to win another title

DETROIT – While many starting pitchers would consider getting banished to the bullpen a demotion, Tim Lincecum has embraced his new role as a key reason the San Francisco Giants are on the brink of a World Series title.


The Filipino-American Lincecum, a Cy Young Award winner in 2008 and 2009 and arguably baseball’s best pitcher, was 10-15 this year with a 5.18 ERA before being yanked from the rotation for the playoffs.

Oklahoma City Thunder traded James Harden to Houston Rockets

Unable to work out an extension with James Harden, the Oklahoma City Thunder traded the Sixth Man of the Year to the Houston Rockets on Saturday night, breaking up the young core of the Western Conference champions.


The Thunder acquired guards Kevin Martin and Jeremy Lamb, two first-round picks and a second-round pick in the surprising deal that was completed Saturday night. Oklahoma City also sent center Cole Aldrich, and forwards Daequan Cook and Lazar Hayward to Houston.

Kobe Bryant will miss Lakers’ final two NBA pre-season due to sore foot

LOS ANGELES – Los Angeles Lakers superstar guard Kobe Bryant will miss the team’s final two pre-season NBA games because of a sore right foot, the team announced on Wednesday.


Bryant hurt his foot in the third quarter of a loss Sunday to Sacramento and will be re-examined this weekend by doctors ahead of next Tuesday’s NBA season opener, when the Lakers play host to the Dallas Mavericks. 

James Yap regrets ejection due to flagrant against Jireh Ibañes

San Mig Coffee superstar James Yap came out with guns blazing against Rain or Shine Wednesday night, scoring 15 points in the first quarter. He easily broke his tournament high total by the third quarter, and it seemed no one could stop him.


But Elasto Painters defensive specialist Jireh Ibañes was able to get into Yap’s head, and the two-time Most Valuable Player ended up getting ejected. All Yap could do was watch as the Mixers collapsed and yielded to Rain or Shine, 80-79.

Manny Pacquiao, Juan Manuel Marquez start sparring sessions


Oceans apart, Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez have both begun their sparring sessions on Monday, according to reports from their respective camps.


Pacquiao and Marquez slug it out on December 8 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

It was Pacquiao who actually staged his own sparring session when he went three rounds with Filipino welterweight Antony Marcial at the gym owned by businessman Rey Golingan.

FIBA Asia reschedules Champions Cup Finals due to security situation in Lebanon

The finals of the FIBA Asia Champions Cup has been postponed because of the worsening security situation in Beirut, Lebanon.


FIBA Asia confirmed the development in a news item on its website. Al Riyadi Beirut of Lebanon and Mahram of Iran had been scheduled to play in the final match. “FIBA Asia will take a decision on holding the Final Game of the event very soon,” said the organization’s secretary-general Hagop Khajirian.

NCAA Committee Demands Public Apology From Letran Coach Louie Alas



The NCAA management committee has decided to uphold the recommendation of commissioner Joe Lipa on Letran coach Louie Alas regarding who made a “slit-throat” gesture in Game Two of the NCAA finals last Saturday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum in Cubao.

The Knights clinched the equalizer, 64-55, in Game Two behind double-double performances from Jonathan Belorio and Jam Cortes. But an untoward incident took place in the dying seconds as technical committee member Romy Guevarra crossed the court towards the direction of the Letran bench where he reportedly gave Alas a dirty finger sign.

PFF, PSC preparing for potential Suzuki Cup Football Home Match



The Philippine Football Federation, together with the Philippine Sports Commission, is exerting all efforts to make the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium a viable home venue for the national football team should it advance to the semifinals of the 2012 ASEAN Football Federation Suzuki Cup.

When the Azkals reached the semifinals of the Suzuki Cup two years ago, the Filipinos were forced to play their home match in Indonesia due to a lack of venue that meets the organizers’ standard. Indonesia won the series on aggregate, 2-0, to end the team’s surprising run in the tournament.

CONFIRMED! Jessica Sanchez to join 'GLEE Season 4'



It’s confirmed. Jessica Sanchez will join the fourth season of “Glee”.

Entertainment website TVLine.com reported on Monday (Tuesday morning, Manila time) that the “American Idol” runner-up “has closed a deal” to be a part of the popular musical series but provided no further details.

“Glee” creator Ryan Murphy confirmed the news on Twitter for the website’s reporter and shared an idea on the same post.

For YOUth, How It Feels To Be An Unemployed Graduate



The status of youth unemployment here in the Philippines has been revealed by an alarming report in Interaksyon, the official news portal of TV5 (Kapatid). The report cites that youth unemployment is at an "alarming rate" of 17 percent, which is twice the national average.

I cannot help but agree with what the report contained. It's true. There is a widespread job mismatch and skills shortage, although companies have a lot of unfilled jobs.

PBA Suspends Referee In Barangay Ginebra - Rain Or Shine Game



The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) has handed down a suspension on referee Jun Marabe upon review of the official’s performance in Ginebra’s 98-94 win Sunday night over Rain or Shine.

Sotto On Removing Libel From Cybercrime Law: “The President is not against it, why will I go against it”



MANILA, Philippines - Senate Majority Leader Vicente Sotto III filed and later withdrew a bill seeking to abolish the much-assailed libel provision in Cybercrime Prevention Act - in deference, supposedly, to the sentiments of President Aquino.

Sotto said he filed a bill last Friday to remove libel from the Cybercrime law, but when he heard the statement of President Benigno Aquino III on the said provision, he opted to withdraw the measure.

2012 UAAP Men's Basketball Finals: GAME 1: Ateneo vs UST Full Video Replay



Ateneo de Manila University used a monster second half start before relying on its championship composure in the endgame to upend University of Santo Tomas, 83-78, in Game One of the UAAP Season 75 finals Saturday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.

The Blue Eagles opened the third quarter with a 17-0 run that turned a 38-31 halftime deficit into a 48-38 lead. The Growling Tigers came back to briefly retake the lead in the fourth, but several Ateneo players, including Kiefer Ravena who scored with 8.8 seconds to clinch the game, made crucial baskets late as the Blue Eagles took an early lead in their best-of-three championship series.

No More GMA7-TV5 Merger After MVP Fails To Acquire GMA Network



MANILA, Philippines (UPDATE) - Businessman Manuel V. Pangilinan won't be buying another TV network after all.

In a disclosure to the stock exchange, publicly listed GMA Network Inc. said discussions with MediaQuest Holdings Inc. for its possible acquisition of a controlling stake in the network have been terminated. 

Mediaquest is an investee company of the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT) Retirement Fund.

Phil, James Younghusband back with the Philippine Azkals



MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Azkals have called up Phil and James Younghusband to participate in their 10-day training camp in the Middle East, which starts October 7.

This, after the Younghusband brothers were controversially left out of the Azkals roster for the recently concluded Philippine Football Peace Cup.
